HOW TO BECOME A DENTIST IN THE UK

become-a-dentist-dr-alka.
Hello my name is Dr Alka,
.
I qualified as a UK dentist from Kings College Dental School in London with my BDS it was one of the best days of my life.
.
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.
.
Whether you are a young high School Student, a Concerned Parent, a Career Adviser just wanting some information on how to become a dentist

OR
You are an A level, Mature or Graduate Student ready to apply to dental school, this site has information for you all.
.
If you are thinking about a career as a dentist I know exactly what steps you will go through after all I have been through the entire studying and selection process successfully myself.
.
You need to decide if becoming a dentist is right or you.
.
Most dentists practicing today made thier decision to become a dentist in late high school or early college.
Its never too soon or too late to begin some serious thinking about your career in dentistry.
“no one in my Family had ever even been to university,
never mind become a doctor or dentist …
it was frustrating trying to work it all out on my own…
but that only spurred me on more..”
There were lots of steps along the way to becoming a dentist, for example firstly I had to conquer myself and believe I could do it, I had to decide if it was the right career for me. I then had to work out what and where to study, followed by various stages of applications and trying to convince the right panels that I was the right candidate for the much sought after dental school position.

Do as much research NOW to make sure this is the RIGHT DECISION FOR YOU.

.
Studying to become a dentist can be a long process:
2 years getting top GCSE results
+2 years getting top A Level results
+5 years in dental school
+1 year vocational training
TOTAL TIME = 10 YEARS
.
pathway-to-become-a-dentist
You Need To Plan Early NOW.
.
To become a UK dentist you will need to be accepted on a BDS course (or sometimes a BChd) at university. The subject you will be studying is Dentistry.
.
Your application form will include your academic grades and subjects i.e. GCSE’s and A Levels.
Universites look for specific subjects and specific grades that they want you to have studied.
.
You must know what these are early on so you can make the right decisions EVEN BEFORE YOU’VE CHOSEN YOUR GCSE’S OR A LEVELS if possible.
.
Some univeristes accept A/S levels again you need to now who accepts what and what is expected early on.
.
Another part of your application asks about areas such as Relevant Work Experience, Extra Ciricular Activites and you are also required to complere a large section giving a Personal Statement about yourself. You will also need a Referee.
.
Some dental schools require you to sit UKCAT (UK Clinical Apptitude Test) and some don’t.
All of these areas need CAREFUL CONSIDERATION EARLY ON, don’t wait till your ready to apply to dental school and then panic that you have missed some critical area.
.
Being prepared early on is the key, if you know what will impress the admissions tutors when the time comes you can be miles ahead of the crowd.

But wait…it gets more interesting..

.
.
Did you also know that Dentistry is ONE OF THE MOST (IF NOT THE MOST) competitive course to get ACCEPTED ON at university in the UK today?
.
I Recently Read In The Daily Telegraph
That Dentisty As A Course Has The Highest Ratio Of Applications To Available Positions Than Any Other University Course In The UK..
.
For example 871 STUDENTS APPLIED to Birmingham dental school last year for JUST 60 OPENINGS…
.
Dr Alka Why Is It So Competitive?
.
The role of a dentist involves much more than just pulling teeth.
.
You are required to calm nervous patients, design and discuss treatment plans, analyse x rays, conduct surgical procedures such as extracting wisdom teeth, conduct root fillings, fit crowns and dentures.
.
Y
ou are also required to work as part of a close team, amongst many other neccessary skills and attributes.
A dentist has to make decisions based on sound ethical, moral and scientific principles, exercise initiative and personal responsiblity.
As a healthcare professional providing a caring service for the local community you will be working in close contact with many people.
.
For some the prestige of the becoming a dentist and getting the Dr’s title can be very appealing.
Financially the job can also be very rewarding often carrying a six figure salary and great job prospects and security for life.
It is for these reasons that dentist are both professionaly and higly competent in their role.
.
As a result of all of the above factors successfuly applying and securing a place at dental school has become very, very competitive.
.
This has led to a huge increase in applications for dentistry BDS courses in the UK.
.
Many students meet the Minimum Academic Requirements
to get into dental school and so all applications are considered within a competitive environment.
.
Therfore many dental schools will endeavour to consider OTHER FACTORS IN ADDITION TO EXAM RESULTS!
.
Usually No Dental School Offers are made without an interview.
.
Interviews are usually conducted by at least two senior members usually from the clinical and biomedical sciences staff.
The aim of the interview is to assess your personal qualities and to find out whether you have the the potential to become a successful member of the dental profession.
.
You need to know how to express yourself at the interviews and how to highlight your best qualites in the most effective way.
It would really help if you had an idea of what type of questions to expect and what the interview panels criteria for selection are.
.
Dr Alka What are the Benefits Of Becoming A Denitst?
.
Working as dentist can be very rewarding and fulfilling:
.
- Great job prospects you can work in lots of different fields from the NHS, Private Practice
or even the RAF
- Job Satisfaction, dentistry is a Caring Profession, so very fulfilling helping people out of pain
or with cosmetic dentistry i.e. increasing someones confidence.

Six-Figure Salary
Working An Average 37 Hour Week,

.
Dentistry Is A Caring Profession and Can Be A Very Fulfiling & Rewarding
Career As You Are Providing Essential Healthcare and Helping people..

.
Ok Dr Alka, This Is All Very Interesting..
.
But How Come Your Willing To Share ALL of This With Me?..

.
It All Started When My Younger Brother Came Knocking At My Door,
For Career Advice..

.
here’s what happend..

.
Simply because of something which occurred to me when my younger brother came to me for career advice. I guided him through the whole process from what subjects to study, going over application forms with him, to role playing interview techniques that he would face with the panel etc.
.
Many of his friends got rejected from the dental schools they applied to…
but my brother followed the advice I gave him and I am proud to say he got the grades, flew through the interviews and application process. He was accepted by one of the top dental schools in the UK, he is now a qualified dentist working in private practice specialising in cosmetic dentistry.
.
This experience taught me lots of valuable lessons.. I have since mentored several students and they have achieved similar results and gone on to pursue thier chosen career as Dentists.
and that’s when it hit me..
I then got thinking, I really enjoy helping students with career advice, maybe I could use my experience to help other students or parents by preparing them for a career and mentoring them along their path on how to become a dentist,
.
I could have done with a mentor, something I wish I had when I was trying to work it all out on my own…….
.
My method has really helped a lot of students and it can really work for you too..
In response I have written this guide on how to become a dentist.

Getting AAAABBBBCCD in my gcses wasn’t the best start to trying to apply for dental school, I knew my options were limited and decided to roam the internet and luckily stumbled upon this very amazing guide. Containing an astonishing 100 practice interview questions which I was doing in the car and in the common room almost every day towards the interview. I managed to get an offer of AAA at Dundee University, currently rated by the Guardian as the 2nd best UK dental university, through excellent personal statement and university choosing help offered by both the guide and Dr ALka herself! After bearing in mind the great study techniques also in the guide I ended up getting A*A*A as my A-level results!
.
I would definitely recommend this guide to anyone looking to apply for dentistry as the help is top quality, irreplaceable and near enough essential to getting a real shot at becoming a dentist, especially if you have no idea as to what you might be getting yourself into!!!
Its been a great 2 years, the journey’s been awsome and good luck to anyone reading this and wanting to become a dentist!,

Hi Dr Alka,  Just me here, hope you are doing well! I’m just letting you know how first year went for me, sorry about the long gap in replies. Thanks a lot for your help and encouragement around Christmas time, I managed to pull myself together and got some great results. Then at the end of year exams I did really well in again and they invited me in for a VIVA where they each took it in turn to grill me! And eventually I finished the year with an overall distinction!
Thanks very much for all the help you gave me over the years it really was invaluable, I’m always telling dental applicants to grab your ebook if they can! I’m just about to start second year now  (very exited) I’v just got some extracted teeth from my dentist which we’ll be using to practise on next year! (as well as a boot load full of old dental textbooks!) I’ll make sure to keep in touch and let you know how the years going!
Thanks again!

Juzar

I am only fourteen years old and I have always wanted to become a dentist as it changed me completely when I went to the dentist for the first time. Recently I had two teeth pulled one taking up to twenty in what everyone calls the dreaded chair but it wasn’t even that bad. I also have really good hand eye co ordination and I would to become a dentist in this modern era.

Hi. reading this has made me want to work harder in achieving a career as a dentist. I love the all lot. I am still a little puzzled about what subjects to take in IB seeing as am not doing A levels. Was wondering if someone could possibly help me? I am a little worried knowing that the work of a dentist is very competative and that my IGCSE grades where average and not anything special, but hopefully things might just turn around.

  • Hi Quickstar,
You can and will get there, key is you believe it can happen and work at it.

Juzar, I am so proud of you and am very honoured I was able to work with you

Hamda, If you are going to focus on any subjects , make sure that you really do biology, human biology , chemistry and maths, english and either physics or art…all of these are rlatable to dentistry.

If your grades of your GCSE’s are not that great, you may think about redoing them ? Some universities will do expect 6/7 A/A*

You can do it if you really want to, put your mind to it, focus, say No to your friends
and other distractions for a a year or two..

    Good luck..

    Alka

  • Ken

Hiya Alka I have a brother-in-law who’s a dentist, but I just wanted to ask, what GCSE and A Level grades did you get? I just finished GCSEs, and I’m kinda worried. I got 3A*s, 4 Distinctions (in IT, an OCR Nat certificate equiv to 4 A/A*s) and 5 As and a B. Is this enough? Or shall I retake some? Email me with the reply please :) rehma017@hotmail.com. I’m looking forward to buying this guide.

    Thanks.

  • Thanks for the comment

The GCSE’s Seem really great. The strictest uni’s want 6/7 A/A*’s and you seem to have that..

I would more be concerned now with your A levels as well as extra curricular activities

My A levels were 2A’s and a B in bio, chem and maths…my GCSEs were not the greatest with 11 being A, B’s and C’s….they were not as strict as they are now,…..I would probably get in with my A levels but not GCSE’s!

    I wish you luck
    Alka

  • NORNE

I am now worried after reading these messages as I only got 2B’s 4C’s 1D and 1E in my GCSE’s, So i have no chance i getting into Dental school :( Is there a way i can become a Dentist with these?? Please reply

  • Hi Norne

    Thank you for the message

the first thing I want to say is “don’t worry”

The results you have probably are not what the dental schools are looking for, BUT You still have a chance

And this is what you need to do

Retake some of your GCSE’s while you take your first year of A levels.

This means you will be working very very hard, but it is possible

You can do this if you decide you wil deedicate your next two yearso your life….It is up to you

You still have a chance so if you choose you are going to work hard and do it, you will have a good chance

Let us know what you are going to decide…

    There are always other routes,

    Take care
    Alka

  • NORNE

Thanks for the advise, i will check with my college about retaking some of my exams. Once again Thanks :)

  • Hanna

Hi Dr.Alka, I too am interessted in Dentistry but i am worried that i am unable to go to a reasonabley well university.I have similar grades to Norne because i moved from the UK to Uganda during my IGCSE course :( and i wouldnt mind retaking them its just that i am doing my IB and its 2years of extremeley hard work that i cant offord to side-track. So i am wondering if there is another way to go about it and i am currently interesting in going abroad for uni like canada but i am wondering if uni’s accept IB certificates of SL chemistry and Biology or HL Biology and SL chem?
I understand that i am in a sticky situation and was wondering if you could help me get some answers.
I’d really appriciate your help please.
    Thank you.

  • Hi Hanna

I can seeyou are in a bit of a sticky situation

If you would like to go to Cananda, you will need to find out exactly what you will need from their universities as I do not really know.

In tems of here, You will need rasonably good GSCE’s to get into University, so you really haven’t gt a choice, if you want to get in with retaking them.

The other option is call 4-5 Universities and ask to speak to thier admissions department. Tell them what you are doing and what grades you have got and ask them how likely you are to get in.

They will tell you what grades they expect minimum, that way you cn decide what you want to do

    Good Luck
    Alka

  • Adnaan

    Hi this is me Adnaan.
I was just liking to ask what would be the best subjects to take for A -Levels because i am a year 11 student and i cant decide which subjects i want to choose to do denistry in the future.

  • Hi Adnaan,
    thanks for your email
You have to take biology and chemistry

Ddepending on the university you want to go to you can choose your remainig A level and AS level

Some universities want you to choose a science or a maths, others don’t mind. I have this all in the uni guide book….so it is worth looking at

Also make sure you do enough work experience and the right work experience and the right extra curricular activities as they are really important
    Good luck
    Alka

  • Adnaan

dr alka i still have another question if i get b’s in the sciences would the dental universities exept me or if i got an A in one of them is there a good chance of getting in. but also if i pick maths in A-Levels, is there also another subject i can choose besides that.

    Thanks Alka

    alka

  • Milan

I was the first in my family to go to university and it does make the family proud. You can do it…you just will have to work hard. Some universities will expect better grades then others, so work and get the bst grades possible

You can always retake with your first year of A levels

You need more then just one work experience, you need at least 2 and 2 different ones
Please red the book to help you
    Good luck
    Alka

  • Milan

  • Hanna

Hi dr Alka, Its hanna again. I have been doing a little research and found that uni’s in canada only offer dentistry to canadian citizens and im british, other then that they offer dental hygeinist. I dont kno much about dental hygienist and i really wanted to be a cosmetic dentist :( I am still looking around but say if i was to take dental hygienist, could i come back to uni and then become a fully qualified dentist? Is there more than way of becoming a dentist? I am really depressed because not only is my igcse not supporting me but i feel as if theres no abosolute hope. Some unis in london do offer a predental year would that be helpfull especially with my IB certificate? Cosmetic dentist is my aim and i really need help to get there. I am working super hard this year to get the best grade in my bio and chem but am doing them in standard but i got the teachers to consider me for higher if i do well in my tests. D: are there other possibilties dr alka.
    Thank you once again.

  • georgina

    Hi
    I got 1 a* 8 a and a b in bio at gcse but I’m redoing the bio
    Is this good enough?
Plus do unis think of d of e, and community service as enough extra curricxular activities whar else could I do
    Pls reply by email xx

  • Hi Hanna,

You need to call the unis you want to go to in Uk and see what options you have. About Canade I really dont knw, but for UK, you can call them and see what they suggest to you. Then take it from there.. it might mean you have to do an extra retake year…1 year in the whole picture of things is worth it and wont be that long. So first ring all the uni’s tell them what you have and how you should proceed to have achance to get into thier uni. You also need to focus where you want to be canada/uk, then work towards it

    Good luck
    ALka

  • Hi Geaorgina

    Your GCSE’s are great

Please make sure you do work experience and something with your hands to show you are good with them

    Good lluck
    Alka

  • Anita

    Hi Dr Alka

My name is Anita. I’m currently in A2, however I didn’t get good grades for my AS this year
For my GCSEs I got 7A* and 4As, but for AS i got BBDD. I was really dissapointed and didn’t realise that I would get these grades. But I still really want to be a dentist. I’m not sure if I’ll get into a university as dentistry has become so competetive and I’m planning to retake the exams and get all As for my subjects
Would it be better for me to apply to a BioMedical course, then do a post-graduate? If you have any suggestions please let me know

    Thanks
    Anita :)

  • Hi Anita

    I am sorry about that.

What you need to do is get the grades you are and then apply. If you really want to dentistry then you can apply after getting the grades and you may get in through clearing or for the following year

That is better the takeing a 3 year degree

But mae sure you work really hard and do all the work experience and the things I have written in the book
    Good luck
    Alka

  • Anita

Thank you so much for your help! :)

  • Jess

    Hi,
I am 15 (year 11) and I really want to be a dentist. I am not worried about my results because I know that if I put the effort in I can get really good grades, my only problem is extra curricular stuff. I have grade 2 cello and I am teaching myself to play guitar but I don’t really have anything special. I will try and spend the next few years cramming in as many extra curricular activities as I can but what do you reccomend I should do to give me the best chance of getting in to university
    Thanks

  • Hi Jess

You don’t need to be anything special in the extra curricular activity
Just need to do some that show you have the qualities a dentist needs

Also you need good work experience, get the book and you will
see some tips that you can use, it is too much to write here

    keep studying
    Good Luck

I want to be a dentist but I don’t know if I got the high enough grades? I got Health and social care double award A*, Religous studies A*, English Literature A, Core science, double science, french, maths, english language B and Design and technology (shrot course) D? I have already and I am planning on doing loads of extra curriculum activites, work experience, getting a high mark on the UKCAT test and doing great is AS levels (I am in my first year). Do i still have a chance, be honest?

  • Hi Lindsay

Yes you do have a chance but please make sure you choose to apply to the right Uni’s as some will want you to have 6/7 A/A*’s and others are not so strict.

I have sorted these out in the university guide and can’t remember as there are quite a few

You do have a chance is you do well in your AS levels and do the work experience and good extra curricular activities

    Good luck and work hard

Hi im 12 years old and really wan to become a dentist, i have already done quite a few extra cirucular activities (bronze/silver award in scouts and will soon have gold, grade 2 french horn, 1 belt from black in karate) i was wondering what GCSE’s to take? I get high grades in class top in maths xD 1st or 2nd in science and about 1st or 2nd in english, will i be able to become a dentist if i keep it up?

  • Hi Andy

You are doing very well and if you keep it up I am sure you will get there

In your GCSE’s make sure you take sciences and extra biology if possible, and anything else you can think of that relates to dentistry
Psychology, woodwrok or anything else to show you are good with your hands
Anything at all that could be related
and make sure you get at least 6-7 A/A*’s

    Good luck

    Hi
I’m an A level atudent who just recived her A levels and i got ABB now i know this isn’t good enough for dentistry but after all the work experience I know i want to do this. Now i don’t know whther i should resit exams and how many uni’s accept resit applicants. Or if i should just do a biomed degree and then apply.

  • Hi Anita,

Yes you can resit, and tehre are certain unis that do accept resits, but you will need AAA. In my university guide I do go through all the ones that do accept resits and what they would want, but it is too much to write here

You can also go down the BSc route but you will be wating an extra 2 years, and you will need at least a 2:1

    Good luck

Hello, i’m a year 10 student and i really want to become a dentist, i decided about 4 months ago just from a trip to the dentist.I decided this is the career path i wanted to take as i know how much pain i was in and would love to help people overcome pain, I would just like to no what Gcse’s i will need to get, i’m predicted: A-Science, A-I.t C-mathematics and B-English?

  • Hi Shannon,

Your Science predictions are great. You may need to work harder to get a better grade in Maths. Some universities will want more A/A*’s and others do not mind as much

I would say to have the best chance aim to get at least 6 A’s in your GCSE’s makeing sure you do well in your science, maths and english

Also make sure you do other things which will make you a good candidate like work experience and extracurricular activities. If you read my book you will see everything you need to do. The earlier you start the better since you will need time to complete the things which will increase your chances to get into dental school.
    Good luck
    Alka

    Hi Dr Alka,
The advices are so helpful and i’m definitely getting the guide.=D
I haven’t read many books on dentistry. I was just wondering if you could please suggest some books that we could read if we want to do dentistry.
    Thank you!

  • Talha

    Hi Dr Alka,
I am currently working in IT and have education up to Masters Level. I always wanted to be a dentist. I was wondering if I can pursue this path now or is it too late for me as I have just turned 30 :-) . If its not too late what do I need to do.
    Kind Regards,
    Talha

  • Hello Eva
To be honest there is not another book which is why i wrote one :)

the best way to find out if you want to become a dentist is to do work experience. It will make you realise what being a dentist is about
    Good luck
    alka

  • Hi Talha
It is not too late for you, I had a student in my year who was 35, so it is very possible. You can pesue this path

I would call the iuniversities which you would like to go to and ask them what they would want from you and then do it
Also you will benefit from doing the right work experience and extracurricular activities
    Godo luck

Dr Alka, I am really worried about my career now. I am doing A levels at the moment and the subjects I study are:
    Biology, chemistry, psychology and maths.
Im in my first year of collage.
My GCSE results are not very good. I got 3A’s 4B’s and 3C’s.
Is it possible I could get into dentistry with those gcse grades?
